Dawn's photo with text critique

1) The first photo is of a brown wired fence that showcases a horse and a welcome sign.  I think this picture is very well exposed, and you can see a lot of texture in both the fence and the horse structure.  I think her framing is well utilized because you can see the entire horse, and you also get the feeling that the fence carries on past the picture frame.  I would have liked it if the flags were not in the picture so that she could have lined up the horizontal line of the fence with the top of the picture.  I think because she used a lower angle and didn't focus straight on the picture she was able to really get the entire view of the horse.  The picture is also well balanced, I think the greenery in the background helps weigh out the heaviness of the brown fence.  The composition also has a foreground and a background because of how the fence separates the two areas.  Overall I think the photo was very well taken. 


2) The next picture is of an older building that has the text antiques as a sign.  The one thing I wish was changed about this picture is the top line of the building.  I would have liked her image to have been pretty skewed so that the top line of the image would have been the top of the building.  I do like how it showcases a frame within a frame, and you can see inside the window to the building.  Even though I wish the sky was cut out of the picture, you can tell that her camera was very well exposed because the brightness of the sky did not effect the end result of the picture.  This image also utilizes the line composition by including both horizontal and vertical lines.  She also incorporates shape, not only through the separations in the window, but also in the pottery that you can see on the inside.  I like how the color blue is carried throughout the picture, as well as the brown boarders surrounding the building. I think she did a really great job in capturing text in her image and by using a lot of the compositional strategies.  


3) The last picture is of a red and white plane.  I really love this picture, I think her angle is great because you get the feeling that the plane is going to take off right out of the frame.  I do wish that she would have sat down a little lower so that you could have seen more of the top wing of the plane.  This image also has a lot of lines carried throughout the picture, in both the plane and the building in the background.  The window at the top of the plane also shows a frame within a frame.  This picture is probably my favorite out of all three because the colors of the plane really pop and you know exactly what the focus was on.  Her whites really pop as well as the black, and you can hardly see the slight shadow the plane is making.  I think this was a really unique picture, and you can tell Dawn really went out to find a different type of image, that was not only incorporating text, but was also very interesting.  Overall it is a great picture that is balanced and appealing.

Dawn's sequence critique

1) I think the composition for her first pictures are both really good.  The first image where you can see the girls walking is taken at a realistic angle, and I really like the reflections she has from the windows.  I wish the small amount of the pillar on the right side of the image was cut out, and the sign in the far back was readable.  This image has a lot of use of lines, and is also using the rule of thirds by placing the girls on the left side of the frame.  The second image is a closed frame, focusing on the girls hands.  I love that the angle is sideways but the girls arm is straight.  I think this image also showcases a lot of texture, both in the girls skin and clothing.  This image also has a lot of lines, but it also has triangle shapes.  Both images feel symmetrically balanced, have a frame within a frame, and overall are good shots.

2) I really like the left image that shows the hummingbird in action.  I think it would have been a great stop action sequence if she could have gotten the bird in the right image as well.  The texture in the left picture is great, you can see texture in every aspect of the picture.  I also think her angle of looking down upon the gnome from a distance is a great contrast to the up close picture that she has on the right.  Both images have use of shape, and are also well exposed.  The left image is more of a asymmetrical balanced frame since the gnome carries a lot of weight on the left hand side.  I really like the use of red color on the right it really carries itself throughout the image (first at the apple, then lips, and hat).  My only real complaint is that I wish both images were displayed as the same size.


3) The blur pictures are really different, on the left side almost the entire dog is in blur, but on the right just the small bottom portion of his foot is blurred out.  I think the angle of her being down on the ground really helps capture the focus of the dog, and gives him an alternate point of view.  I think if she was a little bit closer on the right picture it would have showed more of the dog, and less of the open space in front of him.  Both images have good texture carried throughout the picture, you can really see the fluff of the carpet, the toughness of his fur, and the smoothness of the rocking chair.  Her right picture has a tiny bit of glare, but I like how her dog fills up the entire frame.  Overall both images feel balanced, and showcase lines and texture.

Writing Assignment #1

Nature has always been a complete passion of mine, so when I found this picture I absolutely loved it.  Not only did the photographer do an incredible job in capturing this moment, but their camera settings allowed them to also get great detail in the surrounding area.  I think if I ever have the opportunity to pursue photography I would focus on animals in a natural setting.  The person who took this was incredibly brave for getting this shot; not only were they in close proximity to this potentially harmful creature, but they also were in a low position, thus having a disadvantage for running away.  I do wish that more of the leopard was in focus, so maybe if they would have used a slightly deeper depth of field, it could have captured more of its texture. My lack of experience also wonders how much of the physical environment can effect the results of a good photograph.  So in this case, could the extreme cold have slowed down or warped the camera in any way?  Either way this image is stunning, and I can only hope to capture something as beautiful as this one day.
